The seminar with the partcipation of 4 teachers from 3 countries:
Portugal: Escola Secundária Dr. Joaquim Gomes Ferreira Alves z Valadares-Vila Nova de Gaia, in the region of PORTO.
Álvaro A. SANTOS, the headmaster of the school. He led studies to understand and tackle Early School Leaving (his Master’s Degree Project), and published a scientific article on the findings. He is the co-author of a book identifying and describing praiseworthy activities in Portuguese Schools. He was a member of the National Education Council and has worked in several studies about education matters, including Portuguese Education priorities.
Agostinha GOMES is a Portuguese and French teacher. In addition to being a teacher, trainer and translator, she has had an active participation in civic society, having been municipal deputy and member of the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People.
Escola Secundária Dr. Joaquim Gomes Ferreira Alves, Valadares, is a Secondary School, situated in Vila Nova de Gaia municipality, in the Southern suburbs of Porto. It is attended by 1742 students, aged between 12 and 18. There are 135 teachers, most of them (83%) having at least ten years of teaching practice in the school. The school offers a variety of courses, from general secondary studies, aimed to prepare for higher education, to vocational/professional courses in partnership with local and regional economic tissue, aimed to offer suitable training and qualifications for the job market. The school is situated in a social area where the tradition of early school leaving (ESL) and low interest in educational attainment, as a social (and family) established culture, have been the central problems to be tackled in a sustained and effective way. In fact, from 42% of early school leavers in 2001, the school has been working hard to reduce those numbers, which is still one of the main problems within the local community and in our country. Our national goal is to reduce ESL to less than 10% by 2020. Our most recent numbers reveal a robust reduction to less than 2% em 2018 at school. The school also works with SEN students (3,4%),  and has a autism unit. 36% of the students benefit from free school meals, due to a considerable tax of unemployment rate among parents.
The school takes an active part in the local community and in the region, and students and teachers are committed in various social and academic projects. Notwithstanding social and economic difficulties, our students often achieve decent results in various subjects, Science, Maths, History and Foreign Languages. They are keen on sports and performing arts.
The school works hard to maintain a healthy and collaborative social environment among students, staff, parents, and stakeholders. Among other projects, there is a scheme, involving 180 students, for older students who volunteer to help their younger schoolmates to achieve a better learning. Another group of senior students are involved in a project to manage and solve conflicts among their younger colleagues, as a result of a two year European Project.  Continuous improvement and integration are the key to match the diversity and promote equal opportunities for all students. The school work is continuously evaluated through its Quality Observatory (an all-school evaluation project).
